Have your guest record themselves with the voice recording app on their smartphone (or their high-quality microphone).

Your digital recorder or DAW will only be recording you.

Connect your microphone to the digital recorder (or DAW) to record yourself while you speak with your guest through the video call.

Both the host and guest should use headphones plugged into your laptops to hear each other during the video conference.

You and your guest use a laptop or computer to access the video call.

Host: a high-quality microphone and a digital recorder (like the Zoom H6) or a DAW.

Or a high-quality microphone with a digital recorder or digital audio workstation (DAW) such as Audacity or GarageBand.

Guests: a smartphone with a voice recorder app (like Voice Memos on iOS).

And you’ll only find that out until after the session is wrapped. We highly recommend wired headphones, as wireless earbuds or microphones have given us plenty of issues by randomly disconnecting and reconnecting throughout a recording session.

A video conference service such as Zoom or a remote recording service such as Squadcast.

This results in two high-quality audio files for both the host and the guest called a “double ender.” These two audio files are then synced up by you or your editor. In addition to that, you record yourself locally on a high-quality microphone and have your guests record themselves locally as well – either through a high-quality microphone if they have one or using the Voice Memos app on their smartphone. It requires you to use a video conference service such as Zoom or a remote recording service such as Squadcast to video call your guest and record your conversation with them. The self-sync is our favorite way to record remote interviews without sacrificing audio quality.
